The reason I did not blog for so long was that I traveled to Europe and I forgot my camera in Montreal. So with no pictures it is not that fun to tell you guys what I have been up to...

I gathered some pictures from friends that were racing with me so I will give you a quick run down from my last month in Europe.

First off I landed in Munich ( GER ) and then I drove a long way to Val d' Isere ( FRA )

Once we got to Val d' Isere I could not believe my eyes, there was so much snow....

Can you imagine F.I.S. had to cancel the mens World Cup races at this exact place, one month before we got there because of lack of snow!?!

In Val d'Isere I raced two Europa Cup Down Hills, and one F.I.S. Super G where I finished third.

After Val d'Isere we had a few more races in Meribel ( FRA) and Switzerland before I went to Italy to see my family.

Not quite like his younger brother Hans Olsson, but we like Jon anyways ;-) And maybe one day we will accept him on team TBS (team blue sky) ... if he is lucky.

When I was in Italy my Dad and I went powder skiing at our home mountain Speikboden, which is an amazing place for free-riding...

Now I am back in Mont Tremblant, where I will train for a few day. I am feeling really good on my skis, and I am looking forward for the up coming races in Vail and Aspen.

Happy holidays...

I am back! ;-)

After a great holiday time, which I spent in Mont Tremblant I am leaving tomorrow for Europe.

The past few days involved a whole lot of eating, relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends.

Today though I started the new year on the right foot. Getting up at 6 am for a Super G session with Louis Pierre Helie and Erik Guay. It was a bit foggy on the mountain but we still managed to get four runs in before 9.30 am.

Here are some pics from todays training, it was pretty dark in the morning and my phone did not take any "cover shots", so I had to work with what I got...

Ups and downs of ski racing...

Sorry for slacking on my blog, but I was staying at a lodge cabin in the middle of the mountains so internet was not really high speed. To be honest it was nice (for a few days) to have limited internet access.

The past few weeks have been hard and did not go like I planed, that is the way it goes though in this sport. One day you are up and the next you can be at rock bottom. I have to say that even though the results were not good, I still had some amazing turns. I was just not able to put it all together from top to bottom.

Talking about the ups and downs of skiing , My buddy Hans Olsson is on fire!!! He won both World Cup training runs at the Val Gardena DH... I am so happy for him. Yes it is "only" training but still it's amazing. Tomorrow he will be racing the SG and then on sunday it will be the official DH race.

Cross your fingers for Hans.

He has also been going through the ups and downs..... and now it seems like he's got a grip on the good!!! No matter what his result is this week-end, this pass week is a definite confidence boost for team TBS!

I hope I will see Hans on sunday in the TV as happy as he was after this training day at Stubai in October.

We just went for dinner to a Chinese place and I opened a fortune cookie, and this is what my fortune red. :-)

I thought it would be cool to share with you guys.

Now I am flying back to Quebec, I will relax and finalize my christmas shopping, before I will start training in Mont Tremblant next week. I am looking forward to get back to Tremblant, see my friends and family tank some energy and get ready for the races in January.

Ronny in the Rockies

The last few days I was racing at Nakiska. I am touring the Noram circuit with my friends Alexander Koell from Ost Tirol / Sweden and Arjan Wanders from Holland.

We were not the fastest in Nakiska but at least we are the ones that are having the most fun, I am sure though, the results will come soon, as I am skiing good. Best advice to kids: Remember to ALWAYS HAVE FUN!!!!!

Yesterday we travelled here to Panorama and we are lucky to be able to stay at Alexanders uncle Roko, who is one of the best mountain guides here in Canada at CMH Heli-Skiing.

His log cabin is in the middle of no where and his next door neighbors are cougars and elks.

We are enjoying a day off before we start racing the next Nor - Am series here in Pano.

Hi there...

So I did not really ski the way I can in the last few days.

I raced the World Cup SG at Beaver Creek, but did not make top 30 which was my goal.

Now I am in Calgary and I am racing at the North-American Cups at Nakiska. Today was the first SG race of the series and lets just say I am not happy about how I skied.

But hey, life keeps on going and it is all good as long as I get my good feelings back.... sooner than later that is.

I am already looking forward to the next race tomorrow. Skiing is a hard sport, one turn you have it and the next turn you've lost it.... now it's all about how to get it back. After talking to TBS coach Luis and getting some words of wisdom from Larry and Julie, tomorrow I am going to approch it with a different attitude and try to find my touch again.

Julie and her brother Vince lost their dad 8 years ago today...... let's just say that their outlook on life helps me see my bad days on the hill in a different perspective. It's all about having a positive attitude.

New gear - Aspen.

Getting closer to my first race this season and I am really looking forward to it!

Yesterday I arrived here in Aspen and I love this place. I am lucky to stay with Warner Nickerson at one of his family's friends home. Wow, what a place. Thank you very much!!

Actually Warner Nickerson, Jon Olsson his girlfriend Janni and my self are all staying here together. So I am hanging out with Team TNT this week. Looking forward to that.

For whoever does not know the term Team TNT...well it means TEAM NO TEAM.

Still no camera...

Yesterday we traveled from Sun Peaks to Lake Louise. As most of you may know the World Cup speed season is starting this weekend.
I am not really sure why but, I will not get the chance to qualify for the races in Lake Louise this year. But hopefully I will get the chance to qualify for other upcoming Speed World Cups.

I am still here in Lake Louise though, as an official tester for HEAD and HANS OLSSON. But for a closer look at that, I really think you should check out his website.

So yesterday was a free ski day here at Sun Peaks. It gave us some time to check out the injected hill and to feel out the set up on our skis and boots.

I got to say, I did not expect such a great training hill, it has a bunch of terrain changes and even though it snowed, the training hill is quite icy because of the great injection. The coaches from Team TBS and some local helpers injected 200.000 liter of water into the hill to get perfect ice conditions. Tomorrow afternoon, they will keep going with more water :-)

So today we trained GS in the morning on the ice, and in the afternoon we tested a bunch of skis.

Long drive....

Today Hans, Andy, the phyiso Conny and my self, drove from Canmore to Sun Peaks BC... Wow, was it ever a long drive. I got to say though we had a lot of fun. We played good music on our amazing sound system, had a techno party in the car, played games and so on... So the time past quite fast.

Just so you get an idea where we drove through and where we are now.

I was in charge to drive for the first 4 hours.

So this afternoon we made it to Sun Peaks and it looks like we will have a great few days here.

Pit stop in Montreal...

Montreal is a great city, it is my home city here in Canada. This time though it was only a really short visit.

I arrived Thursday afternoon, and this morning at 7 am I had to leave already for Calgary.

So the past three days not that much happened other then relaxing and spending some quality time with my girlfriend Julie...

I wish I could share some pictures with you, but as I just realized, I forgot my camera in Montreal. So for now I am posting a great video. Check it out, it is amazing.

On the way to Canada.

Yesterday morning as I arrived at the airport in Innsbruck, because I was heading off to Canada. I noticed a familiar face at the check-in line-up...

As a lot of you may know, in the past blogs I often posted some videos of "crazy" rock climbers. Because they impress me quite a bit.

So as I was standing in the-line up, I recognized who it was...

It was Simon Gietl. Simon is an alpinist, extreme rock climber and I consider him one of the best rock climbers out there! Once again, just last spring Simon did another first ascent in the Italian Dolomites.

He had already climbed quite a few first ascents, that since that time have not been done again, by anybody.

Yesterday Simon was heading for Las Vegas. Most of us think Las Vegas is a place to gamble, party and so on, but Gietl explained to to me that really close to Vegas there are great rock climbing areas, where he will climb with his Swiss buddy Roger for two weeks. After that Simon will head to South America and Patagonia for four more weeks.

Momi, I want one too!!!

As a lot of you might know, Hanse's brother, Jon Olsson has an amazing sports car. To be honest, I think it is unreal... It is a Lamborghini Gallardo lp 560-4 with a ski rack on it!! I have never had a chance to get a ride in it yet.

Last night though, Jon came for a visit to Innsbruck and he offered the Lambo keys to his brother.
So Hans and I went for a ride with the 560 horse power-car.

At first I had to help Hans to get into the driver's seat. You know it is not so easy to fit a 100 kg DH skier in to a little sports car like that.

Despite the limited sitting area imagine, how much fun two skie racers had in that thing. :-)

It was so great, I felt like a kid on the night before Christmas....

After the ski training on friday I drove to Italy, to visit my family for a few days.

It it nice to be here in Sand in Taufers for a bit, I can sleep in my bed and recover... well that is what I have been up to mostly yesterday.

Because I did not have any time till now, I decided today would be the perfect day to go and do some motocross...

Time to get dressed and rock and roll!!

Another day....

Today I trained GS in Stubai. On the top flat it was a bit soft because it snowed yesterday, on the pitch though, the snow was quite good. I am happy with my GS skiing it is coming a long. I am still testing some stuff with my boots and skis, but it is all falling in to place.

As you can see I was quite tired this morning in the gondola.

It was a bit windy in the morning, but....

then it turned out to be a great day!!

Hello all!!

I am still hanging out in Innsbruck and we have been skiing SG for the last few days in Stubai.

Hans, Alex and my self were talking about what places we have been and have liked ether summer or winter destinations.

As I am traveling quite a bit in the winter and summer for ski training and races, I had to think about it for quite some time. When I am in Canada I spend most of the time in the province of Quebec, and I have to say I love Quebec, even though my french is not that great, but I am learning!!

Most of the time that I spend in Canada I live Montreal, and personally I think that Montreal is one of the greatest cities in the world!! Montreal has to offer lots of history, a lot of culture, great restaurants and to top it off, the coolest hockey team in the world :-) Although they are on a loosing streak these days.

But for now, lets get back to yesterdays descusion with the boys...

I think in the winter time one of the coolest places to be is western Canada.

Hans really likes Bali! He has been there a few times already during the summer and absolutely fell in love with that place.

Back to my self, because this Bali video is really cheesy!! hahahah... When I am not in Montreal I am in Mont Trembalnt which is about one and a half hours north of Montreal. That place absolutely rocks as well. Endless stuff to do in the Summer and Winter. I got to say though that I might like the summer a bit more there then the winter. The reason for that is, because I love the lake, biking and hiking in that area is amazing!!

Of course there are a lot of other beautiful places in the World I have been, and still have to discover.

Tomorrow some bad weather is coming in, and the they expecting 30 cm of snow on the glacier in Stubai, so we decided to have tomorrow off...

Ski testing in Sölden...

Last night Hans and I arrived here in Sölden, so we could do some ski testing with the HEAD TEAM!!

Quite early this morning we drove up on the glacier. Hans and I tested all our DH skis on a speed track, which was about 20 seconds long. Like that we can find out what skis work on certain snow conditions. At the same time, ski testing really improves my gliding skills.

It was great, the only tuff thing was, that it was super cold up there, and doing 29 runs wearing a thin downhill suite did not feel to good....

After I got back down from the glacier, warmed my self and got the blood flowing again in my feet, I went to see Bartli. Bartli is one of the guys who is in charge for the HEAD ski boots. He makes sure everything fits, feels good and answers any question you my have about ski boots.

Gym session...

Good morning to all of you...

Yesterday Hans ans I had a day off here in Innsbruck! We did not do much at all, I could not sleep long in the morning because I am so use to get up early now. We had a great breakfast and went for a walk in town...That is about all we did.

At this time of the year I really try to ski a lot, the conditions on the glacier are great and mentally I feel like I want to ski more.

It is also really important for a ski racer though, to still work out (in the gym) whenever I can, so I keep my muscles fired and my strength at a high level.

So this morning Hans and I, are having a gym session!! Or should I say a intense gym session?!! :-)

Last time we went to the gym Hans and I made a short video, so I though I would share it with you guys and the world, so you know what we are up to...

Never forget... When you think you are training hard, the others might be training harder!!

Today was my seventh day straight on skis here in Stubai. We had great snow - super weather and we skied a bunch. It was a great camp. I have to say though I am looking forward for a day off tomorrow ;-)

So we had another great SG day here in Stubai, but that is nothing new. ;-)

Super G!!

Wow, this morning when we left Innsbruck it was raining and it did not look good at all! It seemed like it was going to be a tough day out there

Once we arrived at the base of the Mountain it was extremely cloudy.

Once again though, the weather fooled us and half way up the gondola I could see through the clouds and in to the blue sky.

At this point I knew it would be another great day.

The past few days it snowed quite a bit here in Stubai, which is great, because we really needed the snow here in Europe on the glaciers. Despite the difficult snow situation, the coaches of Team TBS Helli and Lois, once again came through with a promising SG track. We started a little bit lower then usual, but therefore we also finished lower and were fortuned, that one of the Stubaier Glacier team cat drivers, was hired to pull us, with his snow cat, to the bottom of the tbar.

So it turned out to be another amazing day.

Back in "Stubai"

Yesterday Julie had to leave to go back to Canada. We spent a great two weeks together. It was nice to have her here.

Julie ready to go back to MTL. Although she looks happy in this pictures, she was not happy to leave me!!

Now I am training again with team TBS in Stubai. Because Hans, www.hans-olsson.com the founder of TEAM TBS, is a good friend of mine and likes to hang out with me :-) I am allowed to stay with him at his nice apartment in Innsbruck.

Like this we drive up in the morning to Stubai, the drive is only about 30 min. There we ski in the morning and then come back to a nice homely environment...

On Sunday morning I made breakfast for Julie and my family. A real canadian breakfast for champions, french toast with fruits, yogurt and real canadian maple syrup.

AMAZING!!!

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day!!

Borg, Federer, FRISCH, McEnroe; All the same to me!!!

Yesterday afternoon I had tennis training with Ossi. Ossi was my tennis coach when I was growing up. In the last few years I was not really able to play because of my knee.... Now that my knee is feeling great I decided to start playing again. I think tennis is a great sport for body and eye coordination, and at the same time it really works your endurance and mindset.

If you can keep your focus for a whole tennis match, I am convinced it will help you for long ski training sessions and intense races. On top of that, Ossi has been helping me a lot with mental preparation. He always has good advice and tricks to help me find my way.

Yesterdays' session consisted of an hour and a half of different drills and foot work. It helps me a lot for ski racing, as I have to be quick on my feet.

So as you will see in the following video and pictures, there is not a lot of difference between the Swedish legend B. Borg, the great Federer and the super-athlete Frisch!

I even impress myself~ ;-P

For my part, I obviously have mastered all three technical phases.

And then when you make a sweet shot, you can celebrate like John McEnroe!! He is awesome.... and his hair was even better than his game. My hero.

A few days ago my sisters, some friends, Julie and I went for a fun hike in the Dolomites. To be exact, the mountain is called Dürrenstein, it is 2.835 m high. It was a great hike and the weather was amazing. The fall in South Tirol is the best time to go in the mountains, the view is so clear and you can see far away into the horizon.The reason for this is that the air is colder, but not cold enough to snow yet so perfect to enjoy the outdoors.

It was Julies' highest summit ever climbed, so she was really stunned and amazed by the view. But to be honest every time I am on top of a peak like that I feel like it is my first time up there too...

Although I am an amazing photographer and tried to get some great shots, it was not possible for me to capture the unbelievable moments we experienced. ;-)

Oktoberfest and Munich!

Since the ski camp ended last wednesday I haven't had the time to rest completely. But it's not a complaint, it's for a good cause; I went to pick up Julie at the airport on Thursday night!

We decided to spend a few days in Munich. A close friend of mine, Andy who lives close to the city with his nice little family welcomed us at their home.

Andy and I barely have time to see each other because I am on the road all year. So the past weekend was a good time to stop by and hang out.

They have the most beautiful home. Andy built it with the help of his friends and family.

On Friday morning Julie and I went to spend the day in Munich. It is one of my favorite cities in Europe. This month is Oktoberfest in Munich and therefore we had to have some Mass ( pints )!! ;-)

This is a typical beer tent at the Oktoberfest. A band plays in the center as people eat and drink joyfully.

The grounds of the festival are lively and very colorful. There are thousands of people and lots of beer-loving people. Lets just say there is no right or wrong time of the day to order a beer!

As for us, we went to the Hofbräuhaus for some Weisswurst and a typical bavarian meal... and beer of course. As you can see in the picture we are more then happy!!

Another great camp!!

What a great ski camp I just had!! I trained GS in Saas Fee and two days of DH in Zermatt. It was amazing! The last three days Hans and my self trained with one of the best team and skiers in the world. The swiss team!! It is great to ski with them and we had lots of fun together...

When we went to Zermatt for two days of DH training we had a perfect set up directly at the bottom of the gondola. Team TBS also had a personal CHEFF on board. Kurt cooked up a storm for us. Thanks again for the great meal Kurt.

As you can see we all look a bit tired after nine days of intense training.

Now I am back in Italy and I am looking forward to pick up my girlfriend Julie at the airport to night, she is coming for a visit.

WaaWaaWiiWaauu!!!

So today I trained downhill for the first time in over two years. I was so excited to finally go fast again and do some jumps.

For downhill training they have a great track here in Zermatt, the top section is flat with some rolls, the middle section is more technical with a nice jump and the bottom section has some good gliding turns.

Right away from the first run on, I tried to focus on the right thing and do my best. It worked out great!

After this training today, I realized again how much I missed the speed in the past years. Also it is really good and important to train different events, because one will help the other...

Once again we are more the lucky with the snow and weather conditions, so we will also train downhill tomorrow.

In the summer it is the time to get the new skis on the snow and ski with them as much as possible. Armin, the great service man and friend, got a bunch of skis ready for Hans and myself. Thank you!!!

At the last run, Hans hit his toe in the ski boot when he landed at the jump, he was in pain going to the top. So in the T bar, he took off is boot, left it in the ski and just rode the T bar on one ski to the top!!
P.S. He is feeling better now. :-)

I have been skiing GS the past four days here in Saas Fee, the conditions are quite good and the weather once again has been cooperating greatly.

The canadian girls tech team is here as well, it is nice to see them, as I did not see them in so long.

I am here in Saas Fee now and it snowed yesterday and today. The skiing was not great today but we needed the snow here in Europe so it is all good. The forecast for the next few days is great though, so we will have high volume ski training to look forward too.

In the past years I was never able to ski high volume because my knee always started to act up if I skied too much. Swelling and pain was the outcome of harder training.

At the beginning of the summer, when I wanted to start with the important dry land training, gym, biking and so on, I was not able to because my knee had kept bothering me.

Whenever I have a problem in my body I always go to see superdoc Bob Litchfield. He is the right guy to see. He is a amazing surgeon and has been fixing my knees as well as the knees of a lot of other professional athletes.

With Bob I know he will do his best to get me healthy as fast as he can. I trust this guy fully.

About two months ago he scooped my left knee. Since then my knee is feeling so much better and I am finally able to do stuff that I was not able to do for so long.

Good times in the gym and more....

In the past week I have been mostly working out in the gym, but also had some time to do some rafting.

Some of you may know that in my time off I am also a rafting guide.

"IT"

When I was just a young boy I knew already what I wanted to be when I grew up; A ski racer!!!!

Since I've had that in mind, all I wanted to do ( and still want to do ) is ski race. I love working out hard and pushing my self to the limit and, it's conveniently the only way to get to the top.

One of my first ski coaches told me once: " Talent will only help you reach a part of your journey. After that, it is your determination, hard work and your will that will make you succeed! Basicly, how much you really want "IT"! "

I started realizing at a young age that if you want something in life you have to breathe "IT", eat "IT" and sleep "IT"...
Obviously brakes and time off are as important as training hard, balance is key.

I find playing sports, especially competitive sports, is a life long lesson learned that will help you no matter what you decide to do in life.

It is nice to see athletes succeed in various sports on TV, but not a lot of people realize how much work and sacrifices are behind all of "IT".

Being an athlete is a full time job. It's not easy to push your self to your best potential every single day, but as soon as you remind your self about your goal and how hard you worked to get this far, you stand up and keep going.

"IT" is who I am.

Obviously he is great, amazing, nuts.... but mostly I find he is mentally so strong. He overcomes fear refocuses and makes it happen.

After a great camp in Zermatt I am now back in Italy at my family's home.
What a great camp with TBS, it could not have been better!!
The coaches Helli and Luis really make sure that we have the best individual training. Thanks again guys, you rock!!

Extreme Slackline

The weather has been holding up amazingly her in Zermatt... I am skiing lots and enjoying every minute of it. I started skiing GS a few days ago. It is nice to be back in gates!!!

Yesterday after skiing we had a great time doing slackline. At the beginning it was kind a hard, but we improved along the session.

Hans was actually pretty good at it!!

Team TBS in Zermatt...

I am back blogging!!!

After a great summer, that I spent mostly in Montreal and Mont Tremblant I came to Europe about a week ago.

Now I am in Zermatt ( Switzerland ) for ski training. We are really lucky to be able to stay at a apartment of a future TBS star. Because of that once again we have the best set up throughout the history of ski racing.

I am really happy to be back here. I did not ski for quite some time, so it is great to be on snow again. The conditions on the glacier are really good, hard snow and blue sky are just the right thing for Team TBS ( team blue sky ).

The coaches Heli Krug and Lois Prenn are really great and make sure that we have the best training space.

F1 Weekend and more.... last blog till I hit the slopes!!

It has been a while since I blogged!!! So this one will make up for it, I promise.

I started my summer training with a little bike tour to the Niagara Falls with my girlfriend Julie. By the way if you have never been there, you should really go see that area, it is beautiful.

One of our bike trips was from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake and back. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a little town located on Lake Ontario. It was to cold to jump into the Lake, but just the sight of it made our day.

The sound and the power of the Falls are unbelievable.

We both have never been there before. We were both really impressed.

The American Falls were as impressive as the Niagara Falls.

Last weekend the Formula 1 was here in Montreal and as a Montrealer it is a MUST! I have to say I have never seen the F1 live yet. This year I got the full treatment with access to the garage and the paddocks. All I can say is WOW!!! It was unreal, to be honest I was speechless. I met some of the drivers, teams and even race car legends.

And all this because of my great friend Caroline. She has been for years on the F1 circuit and has great contacts.

Thank you TEAM LOTUS!!!

Some of you might think these people are absolutely crazy, nuts and out of there mind, a part of me thinks, "Yes they are!!" The other part of me knows that feeling, living on the limit and enjoying every moment of it, pushing your self out of your comfort zone and taking it to the next level. You can not describe the feeling unless you have ever experienced it before.

But also keep in mind some stuff they do is crazy, and do not try it at home :-)

It is the time of the NHL playoffs and I am loving it.

Although I grew up in Italy and only played hockey this year for the first time in my life I LOVE IT!!!

If I would not be a professional skier I would probably get drafted next year to play for my favorite team, the Montreal Canadians. Just kidding I can barely stop on my skates!! ;-)

To night the HABS are playing here in Montreal against Boston, and if they play the way they have played in the past three games it looks good for us. So go HABS go!!

End of the racing season!!

I just finished my racing season two days ago.

Although it was a season coming back from injury, it turned out to be a great one.

Last year after my knee surgery in February, I knew I wanted to keep skiing and reach my goals. At the same time I also had difficult times because I was not a part of the Canadian National Team. I had to organize most of my training by myself, had to budget my whole year and find some strong supporters that would help me out financially to get to the races. I have to say that without my sponsors I would not have made it through the season. Not only did they help me with their generosity but they were also there for me during the hard times.

A big thank you to all of my sponsors.

About six weeks ago when I rejoined team TBS (www.hans-olsson.com) in Italy at a European Cup, I could finally start seeing light at the end of the tunnel. The coaches of team TBS Helli and Alois worked with me a lot and showed that they had confidence in me. I knew that if I kept working hard and kept my goals in sight the season could still turn out to be a good one. AND IT DID!!!

What a great win it was at the Canadian Nationals.

I also just spoke to Anna and she told me that her hip surgery went really well. They cleared out a bunch of cartilage that got caught in her hip joint and she will lose the crutches in a few days from now.

Yeah Anna!! Keep it up and you will be back in no time.

Yesterday I travelLed from Denver back to Montreal. Now I will have some time off, re-energize, spend some time with my girlfriend Julie and get ready for a good summer, which I will be spending a lot in the gym and on my bike.

Spring races!?? Not really...

Yesterday I drove with a few friends from Winter Park to Breckenridge...

Oh yea... I forgot to tell you, we were fully packed!! And had to stop a few times to make sure we did not loose any of our stuff...

We were jammed in the truck as well, but thanks to our safe driver Chris we made it fine.

Now I am in Breckenridge Colorado, for two F.I.S. GS races.

They are called spring series because it is spring time and it is suppose to be nice and warm. But this morning when I got to the parking lot at the hill, I could not believe what was going on. It was -11 in the parking lot, and once I got to the top of the hill it was sooooooo windy, it felt like - 20....

I started with bib nr. 1 which is usually a great thing, but the snow was really bad. It was like skiing on golf balls. Small little ice chunks mixed with some soft powder. I was third after the first run. The second run was quite rough and I ended up fifth. I was not happy with this result today, I know I can do a lot better. I guess there has to be days like this though, so you can appreciate more the days when you ski fast and well.

Toooo bad so sad!!!

I raced the US National Champs GS today here in Winter Park.

After my first run I was in third place which I was really happy about. I was only 6 tenth behind Ted Ligety who was leading, and 3 tenth behind Tim Jitloff...

I felt comfortable in the first run, although some gates where a bit soft.

In the second run I made some mistakes and moved back to 5ft place... Tommy Ford won, Tim was second and Ted finished third. Congratulation guys!!

It got even softer second run and I could not adapt quick enough and I fell on my hip entering the last pitch... But it is all good.... now I am looking forward for the upcoming SG in two days.

I have been racing a lot in the past weeks and also had to travel from one race to the next, tomorrow will be a day off and I will use it to recover so I am ready for the SG.

Woot woot..... what a great week!

After my win in the SG at the Canadian Champs, I finished second at the F.I.S. SG the day after. I was happy about my second place finish as well.

Yesterday I raced the Canadian Championship Giant Slalom.

After the first run I was in 4th place... I "over skied" the whole first run, took it a bit too safe and did not risk enough. As we know as racers, without risk you can not get on the top of the podium.

In the second run I took more risk and skied a lot better. I made a mistake though in the middle of the second pitch which cost me some time. Mistakes happen though....

I still ended up on the podium in third place, which made this a great week of skiing in Nakiska for me.

CANADIAN CHAMP!? YES I AM!!!!

Today I raced the SG and I won!! I am really happy about this win!!

I picked start nr. 1 last night and felt good this morning.

Once again I was the last guy during inspection, but I guess I just need more time then a lot of other racers to really figure out what line I will take. It was the right one!

Once I was getting ready in the starting gate I knew what I had to do and how it should feel, and I also knew that I had the best skis under my feet!

Everything fell in place today.

Canadian Champs...

After a great week in Whistler I am now in Calgary staying with Erik Guay his wife Karen and little Logann.

Erik and his family just came from out East a few days ago, so he was able to bring my laptop and my camera, so I am getting back on it with the blogging.

This week I am racing the Canadian Championships in Nakiska. The first training run was today, followed by another training run tomorrow, then DH race on Saturday.

This morning I left from Calgary with Jan Hudec and his little boy Oakley.

Stoked to be back in Whistler!!

I arrived yesterday here in Whistler. I am joining the Quebec ski team for the last set of races. It is really nice to be back in Whistler, it is one of my favourite places to race. The races will start next week on Tuesday ( if the weather allows us to race ). Right now we have classic Whistler weather. In the valley it is a mixture between really wet snow and rain. On top of the mountain it is dumping snow. I wish I could show you guys some pictures, but I forgot my camera at home in Montreal so it will take a few days until Canada Post will deliver it.

Europa Cup in Italy...

I am in Italy now to be exact in Sarntal. The past few days I have been racing my first Europa Cup speed in a long time.

I joined team TBS once again, hanging out with Hans, Daniel, Romar, Koell and the Coaches Helli, Louis and the Finish b***h Peter Feichter and it has been a lot of fun.

Hans finished second at the first DH behind Erik Fisher who is racing for the US ski team.

I was about 2.50 seconds out, the times were really close together so I was quite happy with my performance.

I had a lot of fun doing DH, although I am still missing the final touch to go fast in DH. I am positive that I will get it soon though.

Helmet artist.

A few weeks a go when I was training and racing in Mont Sainte Anne I noticed that a lot of racers had very interesting and cool designs on their helmets. Close to the designs, or sometimes even hidden in the middle of it, I could see the letters LAU.

After a few days skiing it caught my attention more and more. I really wanted to find out who this was behind all those sweet drawings. It made me want to get a little art work one on my helmet as well. As I was sitting at the dinner table I heard the girls from the Quebec ski team talking about it and it was brought to my ears that LAU was standing for Laurence Vallerand.

Laurence is a member of the girls Quebec ski team, not can she only ski well but she also has a good hand for drawing, she is quite a talented one!

Laurence does not paint brush helmets, she uses some sort of waterproof glass pen.

I've seen a lot of paint brushed helmets and because of safety reasons it,s not the best. If you get your helmet paint brushed it needs to be sandpapered first which is not good for a helmet.

The cool thing about what Laurence does, is that she can pretty much do any design and finish a helmet in a short amount of time. The drawings will not influence the safety of your helmets at all. The helmet will keep its original color and design and Laurence will work around it.

Skiing in Mont Tremblant

The past few days I trained with Jacko Graton, Head coach of the Mont Trembant ski club. He is a great coach with lots of experience and advice. He has helped me throughout the years.

For most of you, you have no idea who Jacko is , so I thought I would briefly tell you about him.

Jacko is a level IV instructor and level III coach, he was also a ski patrol, he flies planes, has a passion for the outdoors, is a master diver.... and this only to mention a few things that he does. Basically he is one of the most well-rounded people and interesting people you will ever get to meet. He has contributed to the world of skiing in Quebec for a very long time, he was head coach of the Laurentian zone and Quebec ski team and also has help a lot of National team athletes past and present reach their goals.

Therefore he was inducted to the Laurentian Ski Hall of Fame in 2010.

So to get back to my training, on Wednesday it was just Jacko and I. Then, for the last couple of days we joined the kids and coaches from the ski club. It was three days of great GS training. I am really happy to have such a great ski club supporting me every time I am back in Tremblant. The coaches are doing a great job, not only on the hill, but also after skiing with great video sessions....

Superbowl 2011...

Yesterday I watched the Superbowl on TV.

For those of you who do not know much about American tradition, the Superbowl is like the FIFA world cup final but for American football.

The Green Bay Packers played the Pittsburgh Steelers and won 31-25.

This is the stadium where the Superbowl was played yesterday, 100 000 fans got to watch it live and hundred of thousands of people watched it on TV. This is a picture taken prior to the kick off.

It was a really cool event to watch, especially the half time show. Not only did the Black Eyed Peas put on a great show but also the one and only SLASH showed us his skills on his guitar.

Frolicking through the snow....

It was a good week for me in Mont-Sainte-Anne to get back on snow. I skied six days in a row, trained and raced three different events. To be exact I raced four races and had two days of Geant-Slalom race training. I am happy to say that I am feeling comfortable on my skis again. I still have work to do on my gliding part in Downhill but I am confident that it will come back to where it once was.

After spending the week in Mont-Sainte-Anne I was briefly in Montreal for one night, and look at what mother nature brought upon this wonderful city.

This morning I drove to Mont Tremblant where I had a nice and relaxing day off. After I organized my ski training for the up coming week with Jacko Graton ( head coach of the Tremblant ski club ) I went snow shoeing with my girlfriend. We had a great afternoon!

Mont Sainte Anne

Last week I left Montreal and headed towards Quebec City. I stopped off at Louis-Pierre's place to see how he was doing. He just had his surgery about a week ago. He is well, up and walking already without crutches.

After I drove to Mont Sainte Anne where I have been training and racing with the Quebec ski team.

I was for-running a few GS races and raced some SG in the past two days. At the same time I have been trying to ski lots to get milage under my belt. My body has been holding up really good. The first few days I still felt my knee and groin a bit, but now it is feeling a lot better and I can almost ski pain free, which is something new for me.

Today I skied my first DH training run in almost two years. ( it is a quite easy DH ) but it was great to be back on the long boards and looking for speed. Tomorrow is another training run and then I will be racing two days of DH.

I did not blog in quite some time.

Just after the world cup race in Alta Badia Italy I raced some more F.I.S races in Italy. At the last F.I.S. GS that I raced in Pampeago I partially tore my MCL ligament and pulled my groin quite bad. I have not skied in over a month.

I came to Canada a few days ago and today I skied for the first time again in Mont Trembalnt QC. It was a cold day out on the slopes but it was great to rip some turns. My girlfriend Julie and I skied with Anna Goodman and her boyfriend Marco ( Marco Sullivan is coming back from a concussion, after a crazy crash at the World Cup downhil in Bormio ). It was fun to ski all together and just enjoy the day.

Mike is a good family friend of ours. He was born in Austria and came to Canada with his parents as a young boy. He has been skiing and racing almost his whole life. Mike was the ski school director where my Mom and Dad worked for a few years. Five years ago, when I moved to Canada, Mike and his wife Donna took me up in there home in Mont Tremblant. They helped me out to get where I am and still support me along the way. Coming to the point, Mike and Donna are my Canadian parents.

A few days ago I was watching the second DH training run in Bormio Italy on the internet. The only not so pleasant thing watching a race online is that you do not see the racers come down, but you can only see there time compared to the winners.

Usually I don't watch much live timing, but this time I was interested because my close friend Louis-Pierre Helie was racing in Bormio and just a week before he had his best race ever in Val Gardena Italy.

Louis-Pierre started with bib Nr. 56 at the world cup DH in Val Gardena Italy and had an outstanding run and finished 13th over all. That day he really stepped it up and had an amazing result along with the other Canadian Cowboys.

So now you know why I was interested in watching the Bormio DH. I was hoping the guys would have another week like the past one. But it turned out to be different.

I kept watching the life timing and it was finally Loui's turn to go. I kept my fingers crossed and I was hoping for a good result.

Louis left the starting gate and shortly after, the race was interrupted.... It is really never a good sign when a race gets interrupted more then a few min. I did not know what was going on so I turned on the TV and there I could see the helicopter picking up Louis. I could hear the announcer saying that they would fly him to the hospital in Sondrio Italy.

The diagnosis was a torn knee and a really bad concussion. Louis got noked out before a jump and flew through the air and landed hard. While still being unconscious, he slid down the icy track til he finally got to a stop.

To start off, ski racing is a really dangerous and crazy sport and so much can happen in a quick second. But we all love to push the limit and at the same time try to keep everything under control but sometimes even we can not control the outcome.

I spoke to Lup a few days ago and he is feeling okay. His head is a lot better and he was well up. He is flying back to Canada today and getting surgery on his knee soon.

For whoever does not know this guy..... This is Louis-Pierre Helie.

I know how it feels being injured and trying to fight your way back. It is not an easy task but I know Lup and I know that he is strong and positive.

I wish you all the best Lup, keep your head up high even when it will get tough. You will be back in no time. We are all behind you.

Merry Christmas!!!

It is the time of the year that I want to spend with my family and loved ones.

I am in Italy at my family's home. It is a really nice time of the year to be in this town. The only thing missing to make Christmas perfect is my girlfriend, Julie.

The past few days we have been spending our days decorating the tree and house. My mom and my sisters have also baked lots of cookies every day. I did not really help baking any this year, but I will help with the eating!!

Tomorrow the whole family will go skiing on our home mountain Speikboden. After that I will have to finish wrapping my last presents and then I can not wait to open my presents.

A tough day at the office!!

Today I raced at the World Cup race in Alta Badia! Wow, it was the iciest hill I have ever skied on. After a really good training yesterday on icy and tough conditions, I was looking forward to today's race.

I started off quite well, had some really good turns, but after a big mistake and almost not making the next gate, I kept fighting to the finish... I was pretty far out, but it was still a very good experience and I learned a lot.

A few days ago I talked to Didier Cuche ( one of the best skiers out there ) and he said that in ski racing there are many more tough and difficult times rather than good days. I thought about it and realized that he really is right. Often you ski well and do your best, but sometimes at the end of the race it is not enough. It turns out to be a tough and sometimes a frustrating day even though you were so close to having a good day. That is how fast it can go in ski racing. You only have about one to two minutes time, where everything has to work right and you have to go all out and put it on the line....

Tomorrow I will have a recovery day at my family's home in Sand in Taufers, and then on Tuesday and Wednesday two more F.I.S. GS where I will try to have one of those good days, where everything will come together.

Life on the road.

After packing up everything in Val d'Isere and an 8 hour drive through parts of France and Italy, I arrived late last night at my family's home in Sand in Taufers, Italy.

It is really nice to spend some time here and see my family and friends.

Tomorrow I will be racing a Europa Cup GS in San Vigilio which is really close to my parent's home. That is the actual reason why I can be at my family's home for a day.

I am looking forward to racing the Europa Cup tomorrow, although I will be starting further back because I have no E.C. points.

After this race I am not sure yet where I will be going to next.

But I will keep you guys up to date.

My mom and Julie will probably not be to happy about the pictures that I will be posting....

This is all the stuff that I always travel with all year round. The skis are missing though.

Well I got my first World cup under my belt since my surgery.... Although it is a great hill and a beautiful ski area, it really was not an easy one to have my comeback race on.

I did not ski well. I was a bit too tense and not solid enough on my skis. But this race is over now. I have to look forward to the next one and give it my best there.

A few nice days in Montreal!

After racing and training in Colorado I flew back to Canada, to be exact, to Montreal. I love that city... and I now consider Montreal to be my new home away from home :-). There is always something happening in the city, especially now so close to Christmas, all the beautiful decorations and lights. And to top it off we also had a crazy snow storm, I find the city looks good in white.

Because I will not be in Montreal for Christmas Julie had a nice Christmas surprise for me. She light up parts of her apartment with Christmas lights and had nice gifts for me.

We also went to Mont-Tremblant to ski for a day with our buddy Chris Spear. It was a really cold and windy day but we still had lots of fun out there carving some turns.

After my short stay in Montreal I hoped on a plane and flew over to Europe where I spent one night with my family in Italy.

Today I traveled for 8 hours by car to Val d'Isère France, where I will be racing the world cup GS on Saturday. I am really looking forward for that race, I really like Val d'Isere. It is not an easy hill to make my come back in world cup. But I am up for the challenge and can not wait for Saturday morning.

Aspen

Last week I spent in Aspen, Colorado. I had my first races since my knee surgery. I raced two Nor - Am Cup races.

First things first....

I arrived in Aspen last Saturday afternoon, Warner Nickerson and his friend Annette picked me up at the airport and I was able to join them at a family friends' place for the time that I was staying in Aspen. As we drove through the town of Aspen and up a hill where the houses got nicer and nicer, I could not believe the driveway which we pulled up into. From the outside you could already see that it was a beautiful home and as soon as I stepped inside, I could not believe my eyes.

The view was stunning, and so was everything else about the place. You could overlook the whole town of Aspen and see right over to the race hill.

We were so lucky to stay in such a beautiful house.

After I "checked into" my beautiful room, we went into town where there was an open-air concert with a band called BLIND MELON. It was their first concert back in two years and we really enjoyed it.

On Monday morning I started with bib nr. 30. which is quite high for a Nor - Am race. The reason for my high bib nr. was because I only raced in one Nor - Am races last year, so I do not have any points any more. There were also quite a few really good world cup skiers racing just a head of me.

I have got to say, the first day racing on monday I was quite nervous in the start because I had not competed in over nine months. That day I skied a few really good turns but I did not make it to the finish.

From the chair lift you could see that you would carry quite some speed in the last section.

On the way up to the start, listening to music and focusing on what I need to do to ski fast!

The next day I found my race mode again and I stepped it up a notch and I skied a lot better. Although I made some mistakes in both runs, I was still happy with my overall performance. I finished 16th.

Once a friend told me: "you should try to finish every race better than your start nr. is and slowly you will move up!! " I will never forget that, Daniel.... thanks.

Back to the roots....

2004 / 2005 was my first year that I raced under the Canadian flag for Mont-Tremblant ski club.

Lots of you might not know my history. So here is a quick review...

My mother is Canadian and my father is Italian from Suedtirol. I skied until I was 18 years old for Italy, and because of injury I did not make the Italian National Ski Team.

Since I was a young boy all I wanted to do was ski race and to be a World Cup winner and I often thought about racing for Canada. So when I got injured and the Italian National Team did not take me, I thought now would be the best opportunity to switch nation and race for Canada. So I called Alpine Canada and they told me that I would need to race the Nor-Am Cups to qualify for their National Team and that they would be happy to have me.

Because of my mom, I had my Canadian passport which made the nation switch a lot easier.

To make a long story short.

The first time I came to Canada to race, I landed in Calgary early one evening and I did not know where to go. All I knew was that I would be racing 3 days upon setting foot in Canada and I needed to get to Lake Louise somehow.

After hanging out at the airport for some time, because no bus would depart that late in the day, some friends of friends ( that I didn’t know ) told me that they would have someone pick me up and that I could stay at their home for a few days.

Two days after hanging out in Calgary I took a greyhound bus to Lake Louise for the Nor-Am Cup races.

That year I raced Nor-Am Cups, National Championship races and lots of F.I.S. races and I qualified for the Canadian National Development Team. The year after that, in April 2006 I was racing with the Nation’s Team.

Last year I was supposed to race the GS at the Olympics in Vancouver, and 4 days before the race I tore my ACL in my left knee and could not participate.

Since April 2010 I am officially not on the National Team anymore.

5 years have passed since I started my Canadian journey. I am still following my dream of winning a World Cup and will once again try to qualify for the Canadian National Ski Team.

The task will be tough (and expensive) but I am willing to go the extra mile to reach my goals.

The past days have been really cold, and the up coming days look like more of the same. I think this is one of the coldest days I have ever skied, and there have been several. At the same time the humidity was super high as well, so it even felt colder. We have to go in to the lodge after every run and warm up our bodies before heading back up for the next run.

Marie-Pier Prefontaine, one of the girls on the national team, started making a bunch of cool neck warmers over the last years, and it seems to be picking up more and more every year. The name of it is I GOT SWAGG. She hooked me up with one, and I am so happy to have it, without it it would make it a lot worse out the in the cold.

Snow in Nakiska!?

This morning when I woke up and looked out the window I could not believe my eyes. Although the weather forecast predicted snowfall I did not really want to believe it. The teams pre season ski training is always here in Alberta but in four years of training here it has never snowed as much as it did last night. Because of that we had a day off instead. Apparently it snowed about 25 cm on the top of the mountain.

So we spent our day a bit differently. First I went and did some slacklining with the girls in the garage and then we went to play soccer in the deep powder out side.

A good day in Calgary!!

Yesterday morning we trained GS with the French team here in Nakiska. It was a good morning, and I am feeling better each day. I am still not fully in race mode, but getting closer each training session.

After our training on snow we drove to Calgary for a good dry land session with Matt Price, who is the teams dryland coach. We worked out at the Canadian Olympic Park. It is about an hour car ride from Nakiska to get there, but the drive was really worth it.

C.O.P. is a great training facility for athletes. You’ll find all sorts of equipment from lifting platforms to ice baths and services like physiotherapy. It was a really good workout with Matt and the rest of the team.

After dry land we met with Derek Robinson the teams sport psychologist. He is the best sport psychologist I have ever met. I worked with him about four years ago when I firs qualified for the national team. He helped me in a lot of ways to achieve my goals. I was really happy to see him again, and I will work with him in the next few weeks before the racing season starts.

Back in Canada!!

Last week I traveled back to Canada. I spent the weekend with my girlfriend Julie, the Langevin family and my parents in Mont-Tremblant, one of my favorite places. It’s very calm and relaxing up there.

It was nice to enjoy the beauty of Tremblant, it’s the “in between season” where the leaves have fallen from the trees but the snow hasn’t reached the ground yet. Only the top of the hill was covered in snow!

Now I am back with the Canadian Team out west, in Nakiska. I will be training here for about ten days. There is not that much snow yet, but the temperature is good to make snow 24 hours a day.

One of the training hilsl is ready, it is a difficult one, especially now because there is not that much snow, it makes the terrain a lot stronger shaped then in the mid winter.

I am really happy to be back with the boys. I did not see most of them since my surgery in February. It’s always nicer to be part of a group and not flying solo!

Now I am in Italy at my family's home. After a few good weeks of skiing in Stubai, I am now doing some of my last dry-land sessions, before kicking off the pre-season ski training in Nakiska. I am working with Andreas Niederkofler, who is my dry-land coach since about ten years. I really like the training with him because it is quite challenging. Almost every time we train together he has some new exercises for me. We are working a lot on balance and stabilization, because I really think that that is something which helps my skiing a lot.

Nach einigen guten Skitrainings Wochen bin ich bei meiner Familie in Südtirol. Hier absolviere ich nun einer meiner letzen Trockentrainingseinheiten, bevor ich nächste Woche nach Canada fliege und es wieder mit dem ernsten Skitraining beginnt.

Hier trainiere ich mit Anderas Niederkofler, der mein Trainer und Ansprechpartner in konditioneller Hinsicht ist. Ich trainiere bereits seit vielen Jahren mit ihm. Mir gefallt dass Training mit Andreas gut da es sehr anspruchsvoll und abwechslungsreich ist. Fast jedes mal wenn ich mit ihm trainiere hat er neue Übungen für mich. Wir arbeiten sehr viel mit verschiedenen Gleichgewichts- und Stabilisationsübungen, da ich denke, dass mir das sehr viel beim Skifahren helfen kann.
